Hands On Bay Area Day 2007:
Results Delight Partners and Volunteers

On Hands On Bay Area Day, 800 volunteers from around the Bay Area transformed 4 under-served schools, helped to build 3 homes for low-income families, restored 5 neighborhood parks, sorted food for the hungry and supported the fight against breast cancer.
“The best part of the day was hearing about how are agency partners were floored by the results they saw,” said Jim Pitofsky, Hands On Bay Area’s Executive Director.  “The volunteers who participated really deserve a huge thank you for all of their hard work.”

“The work was amazing – so many hands, doing so much, in such a short amount of time and what a wonderful difference,” said Rosalind Sarah, Principal of the Global Family School at Jefferson Elementary in Oakland.  “The work of Hands on Bay Area showed the Global Family School community, teachers, students and their families that other folks care about them.”

As the park restoration project at Park Presidio was wrapping up, Robert Watkins, Parks Section Supervisor with the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department exclaimed, “It would have taken us months to accomplish what you were able to accomplish in one day. Thank you!”

Victor Tam, of San Francisco’s Jefferson Elementary School exclaimed, “At a time when our school district faces budgetary constraints that limit maintenance teams from keeping up with the ever-growing demands from the schools, Hands On Bay Area came to our rescue! Thank you!”

Volunteers not only committed to serving on HOBA Day, but also to raise $29,000 from individuals to support the 300 additional service projects HOBA has planned through the end of 2007. They reached out to family and friends to support their efforts.  We are still hoping to raise $14,000 more!

If you haven’t already, please support their amazing work. CLICK HERE to support HOBA.

CEO Speaker Series

On October 11, Hands On Bay Area hosted the first event in its CEO Speaker Series.
The goal of the series is to provide Bay Area executives with an open forum to discuss corporate volunteerism and philanthropy in today’s business environment.

Robert Hanson, President of Levi Strauss North America, and Sheryl O’Loughlin, Former CEO of Clif Bar & Co., led an interactive discussion moderated by the Honorable José Cisneros, Treasurer, City and County of San Francisco.

By facilitating an open and interactive dialogue, the CEO Speaker Series provided participants with tools to incorporate community engagement into their own organizations. The inaugural event was attended by many in the Bay Area corporate world.

Accenture is the presenting sponsor of the series. “In our experience, Bay Area companies are among the very best at coupling sound business strategy with creative and committed approaches to corporate citizenship,” said Accenture’s Northern California Managing Director Chris DiGiorgio.

“There is a growing sophistication to how companies approach community outreach and employee engagement. We hope by helping Hands on Bay Area launch this new Series we are setting the stage for improved peer-to-peer idea sharing and giving the real visionaries in corporate social responsibility a chance to be heard,” explained DiGiorgio.

“By bringing together our corporate partners and the broader Bay Area corporate community, we are advancing the idea that community engagement is simply good business,” said Jim Pitofsky, Executive Director of Hands On Bay Area.

Hands On Bay Area thanks its CEO Speaker Series sponsors: Presenting Sponsor, Accenture, Gold Sponsor KPMG, Silver Sponsors, Levi Strauss & Co. and Adobe Systems Inc., and Bronze Sponsors, PayPal and Full Circle Fund.

Hands On Bay Area Half Marathon Team Charges Ahead

For the first time in HOBA history, volunteers and staff are getting together as a team to train for the Kaiser Permanente Half Marathon.  Team members receive free training from a professional trainer, “Marathon Matt” as they raise money from friends and family for HOBA.

Matt Forsman, aka “Marathon Matt,” is a trainer who specializes in preparing runners for marathons and half marathons.  Although Matt has trained many runners and helped several nonprofits create fundraising teams, he avoids using a cookie-cutter approach.

“Everyone derives something different from the act of running. In turn, each individual has their own personal running goals,” he explains. “My focus is on enabling and empowering individuals to achieve and exceed their personal running goals.”

Why are people joining the HOBA Team? “I remember how much I enjoyed being on a team as a kid - how motivating and encouraging it was - and I think that Team HOBA will be a great way to become a part of another amazing team!” explained Erika Jones, HOBA’s East Bay Regional Program Manager.  “I also found that participating was the best way for me to put my passion into action - combining my love of running with my love of the community.”

Back-to School Back-to-Style Success

In September, HOBA partnered with Jones New York, Macy’s and Lowe’s Home Improvement to give award-winning teacher Juanita Flores-Mejia and her school, Grant Elementary School in Richmond, California, a brand new look for back-to-school.

Ms. Juanita Flores-Mejia won the Jones New York’s Back-to-School Back-to-Style contest for her dedication to teaching.  HOBA managed the volunteers who transformed Grant Elementary School’s facilities, while our corporate partners whisked Ms. Flores-Mejia away for a day of pampering.  Recently, one of Ms. Flores-Mejia’s fellow teachers sent us this letter:

My name is Elizabeth Bundschu-Mooney and I am a teacher at Grant Elementary in Richmond.  I was absolutely amazed by the power of the 30+ volunteers that came to our school today to do a make-over for Ms. Juanita Flores-Mejia.

The whole school and community will benefit from the generosity of the individuals that came to participate.  It is really amazing what you did to her classroom, our staff room, the school front and our school garden.  Our garden (and our staff room) has never looked so good.  I wanted to personally thank you for your part in this transformation.

Juanita is very deserving of this recognition and we applaud her and her dedication to her students and to our school.  We appreciate all that you did to boost the moral of the teachers, our administration and, most importantly, our students.  Juanita looked beautiful returning to school this afternoon.  She was beaming from ear to ear.

Your volunteers were professional, cheerful, hard working and set an example that our students can learn from.  This is the true spirit of giving back and we applaud you and your volunteers for giving to a community in such need.

Most Sincerely,

Elizabeth Bundschu-Mooney
