SPECIAL PROJECT! Memorial Workday for Ben Stone-Francisco at LEJ

Literacy for Environmental Justice (LEJ), in partnership with HandsOn Bay Area, is hosting a memorial workday to honor the life of Project Leader and Eco-Hero Ben Stone-Francisco, who passed away last year.

Ben was a compassionate leader who could brighten anybody's day. He had a fierce love of building community and was a passionate steward of the environment. There is no better way to honor his memory than to join Ben's friends and family for a day filled with ceremonial plantings and habitat restoration. This project will take place at Sunrise Point which is not only the future site of the second campground in San Francisco, but also the last place Ben worked with his former LEJ colleagues.

Work will involve installing plants from the LEJ nursery, removing invasive non-native plants, preparing the site for future habitat enhancements as well as spreading rock mulch to beautify the site and suppress invasives. LEJ will also be bringing out a mobile nursery for lower-impact nursery work at the site.

This is an all-ages family friendly event. Volunteers are asked to wear close-toed shoes and clothes they don't mind getting dirty. A hat, sunscreen and refillable water bottle are also recommended. Gloves will be provided but volunteers are encouraged to bring their own if they have them. After the project, volunteers are invited to stay for a BBQ. If anyone would like to contribute a potluck item to the BBQ, it would be very much appreciated but is not necessary.
