DIGITAL DIALOGUE: How strangers saved at-risk Afghans

In this dialogue, in honor of our MLK week of community service, we will show how a small group of committed people – using their professional and personal skills – can make a difference in the lives of others. This is an opportunity to learn more about humanitarian refugees, who are being persecuted for who they are and their beliefs.

In August 2021, when the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan, leaders from the women’s, LGBT+ and human rights communities were under direct threat of arrest, imprisonment, or death for their activities that were in violation of Sharia Law. Working with Minority Rights Group International and Rainbow Railroad, these volunteers responded to this crisis: two gay brothers with no experience with refugee work and two Iranian-American women who are veteran refugee activists. They have spent the last 18 months evacuating women and children, the LGBT+, and other human rights defenders from Afghanistan. Hear their moving, personal stories about how they collaborated with  Minority Rights Group International and Rainbow Railroad, and rescued and resettled over 100 people in North America and Europe. You will meet some of the Afghans that they rescued.

What to Expect:
Informational, a facilitated conversation led by the executive director of HandsOn Bay Area, personal and heart-warming stories, and opportunities to reflect on how your skills can make a difference - in small and large ways - in the lives of others. There will be plenty of time for questions.
