San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department - Ferry Park

In 1991 the city tore down the Embarcadero Freeway, and the folks kept playing in the dirt where the on-ramp used to be. Eventually the city managed to get grass to grow there (it took a couple tries). In 2001 the city Park and Rec department adopted the space and named it "Ferry Park." All this time the same, more or less, group of folks went out there after work twice a week, every week during the summer when there was enough evening daylight to play. It's a beautiful spot in the evenings. The pleasant temperatures and lack of wind make it one of the best microclimates in the city.
